Which Country Invented Pizza?

Which Country Invented Pizza?

Pizza is now one of the most popular dishes worldwide — eaten in New York, Tokyo, Paris, and Kharkiv. But the question often arises: which country invented pizza? The obvious answer is Italy, though the story has more layers.

Ancient precursors of pizza

Long before modern Italy, various civilizations baked flatbreads with toppings:

In Ancient Egypt people made flat breads with herbs;

In Ancient Greece, “plakuntos” were topped with oil, garlic, and cheese;

In the Roman Empire, focaccia was baked with olive oil and spices.

The concept of “bread + toppings” has existed for thousands of years.

Italy and Naples — the true birthplace

Despite these ancient relatives, it was Italy that gave us pizza in its modern form. The birthplace is Naples, where in the 18th–19th centuries locals began topping flatbreads with tomatoes — a fruit brought from the Americas.

At first, tomatoes were feared as “poisonous,” but poor Neapolitans embraced them, creating the first recognizable pizza.

Margherita — Italy’s symbol

In 1889, chef Raffaele Esposito prepared a special pizza for Queen Margherita of Savoy. It featured three colors of the Italian flag:

red tomatoes,

white mozzarella,

green basil.

This became the legendary Pizza Margherita, still a global symbol of Italy.

Why Italy?

the arrival of tomatoes,

strong bread-baking traditions,

the Italian passion for simple but powerful flavors.

Today, Neapolitan pizza is even protected by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Pizza around the world

In the 20th century, Italian immigrants brought pizza to the US. There, it evolved into New York slices, Chicago deep-dish, and California-style creations. From America, pizza spread globally — to Japan, Brazil, Ukraine, and beyond.

Myths about pizza’s origin

Myth: Pizza was invented in the US. Fact: Americans popularized it, but Naples is the birthplace.

Myth: Pineapple is an Italian tradition. Fact: Hawaiian pizza was invented in Canada in the 1960s.

Myth: The Greeks invented pizza. Fact: Greeks had flatbreads, but modern pizza belongs to Italy.

So, Italy — specifically Naples — is the country where pizza was invented. That’s where bread, cheese, and tomatoes merged into the dish we love today — a cultural icon and culinary phenomenon enjoyed across the globe.
